Together they make up a deluxe compendium edition under the title Goldweights in a cloth bound presentation box with spine label designed by the artist.

The copies of African Goldweights included in this special edition de tête are also signed and numbered 1 through 50.

From the FACSIMILE EDITION description:

To coincide with the publication of his African Goldweights Tom Phillips presents a facsimile of an original notebook of his pen and ink drawings made of Akan goldweights in the seventies.

Over a hundred and fifty drawings record early acquisitions accompanied by handwritten notes detailing the price he paid together with where and from whom he purchased them.

This early selection of objects formed the nucleus of what was to become the world’s most comprehensive collection now amply documented in African Goldweights 1400 - 1900 (Edition Hansjorg Mayer, 220pp. Isbn 978-0500976968), available now in bookshops.

Actual size facsimile of the artist’s original notebook from the seventies in an edition of 300 signed and numbered copies.

Tom Phillips CBE RA is an internationally celebrated artist and an ardent Africanist. He curated the ground breaking exhibition Africa the Art of a Continent at the Royal Academy (London) and the Guggenheim (New York) in 1995 which attracted huge crowds and enthusiastic reviews.

In the last thirty years he has built up the world’s most comprehensive collection of these lively and imaginative artefacts.
